Agility is a performance event which requires a team effort between handler and dog. Teams can participate in and earn titles in sanctioned trials through various organizations. There are different levels of competition beginning with entry level agility (Novice), progressing to more complex levels that require dogs and handlers to demonstrate higher levels of training and performance (Open and Excellent/Elite), NVDTC offers courses at different levels; they are:
- Teaches controls and commands used in agility for lead outs, targeting, table, and sending ahead.
- Jumpers training is based on Zink and Daniels’ Jumping from A-Z and introduces the dog to the fundamentals of jumping.
- Dog must be able to perform certain exercises before advancing to Beginning 1; only one absence is allowed.
- (prerequisite: Control/Jumpers or instructor’s discretion if trained elsewhere)
- Introduction to low A-frame, dog walk, tunnels, tire, table, and broad jump.
- Performance of short sequences of obstacles.
- Dog must be under control and be able to do basic sequencing to advance to the next level; only one absence is allowed.
- (prerequisite: Beginning 1 or instructor’s discretion)
- Introduction to low teeter, weave poles, full-height dog walk.
- Continue work on other obstacles with sequences and basic handling techniques.
- Must be able to perform contact obstacles before advancing to Intermediate; only one absence is allowed.
- (prerequisite: Beginning 2 or instructor’s discretion)
- Work on longer sequences with handling challenges.
- (prerequisite: Intermediate)
- Prepares dog and handler for participation in trials.
- Continue with longer sequences and handling challenges.
- Designed for handlers and dogs who are competing in trials or who are trial ready.
- Additional work on handling and advanced exercises.
